Many people think of back to school when September arrives. On September 20th, the United Way of Pike County thinks of Day of Caring and the 9/11 Memorial Blood Drive. Here is the opportunity for the community and non-profit human service agencies to share the spirit of volunteerism to clean up, clean out, and refresh for the coming months ahead. All around the County you will see people painting, cleaning, filing, gardening, building and, even more importantly, carrying on the tradition of community giving and sharing.

For a great jump start to the day, breakfast will be served beginning at 7:45 am at both the Wallenpaupack Area High School and the Delaware Valley High School. The actual "work day" begins at 9 am and ends at 3 pm. The United Way needs you! If you are a non-profit Pike County Human Service Agency in need of assistance, or if you are interested in participating in the Day of Caring as a volunteer, please check our website,
www.unitedwaypike.org, for the application (here). Mail the application to:

United Way Campaign Funds 21 Local Human Services Agencies

The United Way Board of Directors is pleased to report that 21 local Pike County Human Service agencies will benefit from the generous donations to its 2007-08 fund raising Campaign. Contributors supporting this campaign allowed UWPC to offer hope and support where it is needed most in our community. "The Pike County United Way takes its stewardship of your donation very seriously and minimizes its overhead and other costs so the vast majority of your donation goes to help the community." said Christine Obser, United Way Board President.

Thanks to the 2007-08 campaign donations, UWPC was able to allocate $90,000 between the following agencies: Tobacco Free Coalition, ALS, PCDC, Catholic Social Services, Salvation Army, Pike/Wayne Adult Literacy, Habitat for Humanity, American Red Cross, Penn State Cooperative Ext., Safe Haven, Country Ark Farm, Good Cheer Food Pantry, PC Youth Coalition, GAIT, Consolidated Training & Service New Vision Club House, Camp Speer Eljabar YMCA, Honesdale Volunteer Ambulance Corp., CDD, Holy Trinity Food Pantry, Compassionate Friends, and Good Shepherd Child Care.

The Campaign Allocation committee includes a cross section of dedicated, objective community-aware business groups and leaders working to provide a balanced, comprehensive distribution process. "Agencies that request aid from the United Way of Pike County, know that the application process is a fair and thorough evaluation matching available funds to real need and donators can be assured that their money is used where it is needed most", said Sue Robbins, UW Board Member.

On behalf of these 21 Agencies supporting the community of Pike County, the United Way Board of Directors asks that you please accept our heartfelt thank you for all you have done for those in need and asks for your continued support during the 2008-09 campaign.

Pike County United Way's Annual Day of Caring is set for September 20, 2008. As in the past, the United Way likes to start all its volunteers with a nice breakfast before they set out to give their time and energy to help the non-profit agencies of Pike County. This year Woodloch Pines Resort, located outside Hawley, PA, has generously donated toward the financing of this breakfast. "This is one more example of Woodloch's participation in the United Way's ongoing efforts to serve the people of Pike County. We are grateful that they are helping the United Way volunteers start the day with fellowship and food!" said Christine Obser, UWPC President. UWPC Board Member and Day of Caring Chair, Mike Donlan, added, "We are certainly grateful that Bob Kiesendahl of Woodloch is starting our event on such a positive note!"

This year both Wallenpaupack School District and Delaware Valley School District are participating in the Day of Caring. Breakfast will be served at both locations and will begin at 7:45 am. Golfers Play for Fun to Support United Way

A little rain, even drenching showers, could not dampen the high spirits at the United Way Golf Tournament held at Woodloch Springs Golf and Country Club, Monday, June 16th. Players of all levels came to challenge Woodloch's picturesque and daunting course while supporting a fundraiser which improves the lives of Pike County citizens through the United Way.

The Golfers had a chance to win one of three hole in one prizes - a tractor provided by Tractor John and Krempasky Equipment, a Harley Davidson Motorcycle provided by Baer's Sport Center, or a Bass Fishing Boat provided by Seaman's Marine. One player came within 6 inches of leaving with the tractor! Cocktails, dinner and a drawing for generously donated raffle prizes, completed a day of high spirits and good fun.

But this day was really all about support for the United Way which funds so many of Pike County's human service agencies. Local agencies that were represented at the dinner that evening, explained how the United Way contributes to their efforts at offering hope. Some stories were personal testimonies on benefiting from the services offered at Safe Haven. Martha Dubensky, executive director for G.A.I.T., spoke about the successes of the Therapeutic Riding Center to individuals in need of physical or emotional therapy. "Their stories eloquently reminded us all of the importance of supporting United Way in any way we can. Through our funding, we have such a direct impact on individuals who are in desperate need of help. This was such a shining example of how individual lives can be positively changed because the community cares," said UWPC President Christine Obser.

The United Way thanks all who supported and participated in their 2nd annual Golf Tournament, especially the Woodloch Springs Country Club for hosting this event. Save the date - June 22, 2009 - for a rematch next year!

The United Way of Pike County announces the close of its 2007-2008 campaign on June 30, 2008. Thanks to the generous donations of many loyal contributors in the Pike County community, the campaign is expected to achieve 75 % of its fund raising goal to be used by local human service agencies improving the lives of Pike County citizens. "We are so appreciative and touched by the generous outpouring of support from this community especially during a year of serious economic challenges," said Christine Obser UW President.

Several local businesses provided the momentum behind this year's campaign initiatives. The Chefs United Banquet raised close to $12,000 for the United Way of Pike County and offered delicious dishes from 19 area restaurants. Banner Day events, hosted at several local restaurants were a great way to enjoy a night out with friends while a portion of the proceeds were donated to United Way. Ski Big Bear gave families days of fun on the slopes with a percentage of the proceeds going to the campaign. "Pennies for Pasta" was cooked up by Wallenpaupack Area Middle school students and donated to UWPC. The United Way 2nd Annual Golf Tournament at Woodloch Springs swung into action raising much needed money for UWPC funded agencies.

"Generosity comes from all walks of life and when 'united in effort' it ensures our entire community's well-being. We thank all our United Way contributors," said Barbara Tarquinio, UW Board Member.

"We especially thank our corporate and employee payroll sponsorships who 'Give where you Live' through payroll deductions to the United Way of Pike County and for the confidence you place in our ability to spend your contribution where it truly makes a difference in your community," said Scott Myer UWPC Board Member.

This year individual local business contributors provided the motivation and inspiration through their generous donation and participation in the UWPC campaign.

"These community-aware business groups and leaders inspire us with their dedication and commitment to investing in our future and we thank them for their loyal support," said John Gilpin UWPC Board Member.

Individual donations from loyal supporters continue to bolster this year's campaign . "All contributions, large and small, are essential to creating lasting solutions to critical local concerns. The mission of United Way of Pike County is to focus on what matters in our community and Live United! while building futures. We are eternally grateful to these outstanding individual contributors who trust UWPC to make this happen," said Tom Regenski UWPC VP.

The United Way Day of Caring began this 2007-2008 campaign with over 280 volunteers donating their day to local human service agencies supported by UWPC. "Volunteers are the heart and soul supporting the success of UWPC campaigns. They exemplify the United Way mission to improve the lives of others and we thank the business and individual volunteers for their selfless dedication," said Sue Robbins, UWPC Board Member.

Please note: There is still time to donate and help United Way of PC meet 100% of its 2007-2008 goal. The United Way of Pike County Board of Directors asks that you please accept our heartfelt thank you for all you have done for so many people in our community. Your consistent support has changed lives.

Learning and Fun at the United Way Expo

Beneath sunny skies and light breezy winds, The United Way held the sixth Annual Community Expo at Camp Speers-Eljabar in Dingmans Ferry. Over 30 human service agencies set up tables, each with games and goodies for all the families in attendance. The sense of fun and excitement carried the day while at the same time everyone learned a bit more about the many organizations in Pike County which are there to help enrich everyone's lives. In addition to the activities being offered by the agencies, there was entertainment by the Dingman-Delaware Elementary School Choir and step dancers representing the Sheahan-Gormley School of Irish Dance in Milford, as well as pony rides provided Camp Speers-Eljabar . Thanks to the generosity of Pike County Alliance for Prevention, young and old enjoyed hearing Bill Streeter of The Raptor Center tell about the birds of prey while holding a peregrine falcon, a red-tailed hawk, an owl, and an eagle for all to see - what a special and rare opportunity for the Expo visitors. UWPC Board Member, Bob Veneziale, skillfully manned the megaphone in order to direct all the participants to the many activities.

UWPC especially thanks Camp Speers-Eljabar and Camp Director and UWPC Board Member Ravenell Williams for hosting this event. The beautiful camp setting certainly added to the enjoyment. UWPC Board Member and Expo Chair, Sue Robbins, said, "We are so pleased to once again hold the Expo here. This is one event that should go on every family's calendar. Never can you learn so much, see so much, and enjoy yourself so much, than at this free afternoon put on by United Way. I would especially like to thank Catherine Capasso, Christine Obser, Catherine Boysen, Dana Wojciechowski, and Jill Gamboni for all their time and energy. "

The United Way of Pike County thanks Ski Big Bear and its owners, Ron Schmalzle and Randy Schmalzle, for generously hosting a fundraiser and food drive on the weekends of March 7-9 and 15-16. Originally the event was planned for only one weekend but was extended because of the great reception from the community. A portion of the proceeds from all ticket sales went to the United Way of Pike County and people also donated nonperishable food items for local food banks. Local residents, weekenders and tourists came out on both weekends to have a lot of fun and show their support for the United Way. Everyone enjoyed all the activities Ski Big Bear has to offer including skiing, snowboarding, tubing, and both private and group lessons. There was fun for all ages both on the slopes and in the lodge, where people ate, played arcade games and relaxed.

"It's imperative to have support from local businesses like Ski Big Bear and those that come out to our events. We really appreciate the turnout and especially thank Ron and Randy Schmalzle for their dedication to the community and continued support," said UWPC Board Member Bob Veneziale. UWPC Board Member Tom Regenski added that "It is families like the Schmalzles who allow the United Way to carry out its mission to fund Human Service agencies here in Pike County." Owner Ron Schmalzle said that "The United Way is a great organization that we have been involved with for many years. As local business owners, we are aware of the importance of giving back to the community and helping our neighbors. I am glad that we are lucky to be in a position to help and I would encourage more people to get involved."
