| October 24, 2007 Pike United Way Catches up with the Honesdale Ambulance Volunteer Corps Every year
The United Way of Pike County allocates monies to various human service
agencies in Pike County. One of the agencies who received funding this
year was the Honesdale Ambulance Volunteer Corps. The Honesdale Ambulance Volunteer Corps is a not-for-profit community service organization that handles about 5,000 emergency calls a year. The service they provide is vital in Pike County, especially since so many residents live so far from emergency medical centers. Their organization is integrated with professional paramedics, EMTs and volunteers who are all working towards the same goal; to offer the best help possible to the members of the community. “One of the challenges that we face here is covering the 900 miles of area we serve. Making sure that our emergency vehicles, our equipment, and our staff are always prepared for any situation is most important. The funding from the Untied Way helped our program in many ways. For example, we have machines like our Cardiac Monitor which are over $20,000 in cost and are used a lot. Receiving the funds from the United Way enables us to keep up on maintaining things like that and also maintaining our emergency vehicles. It is important that our emergency vehicles are safe for both our patients as well as our staff” explained Sharon Gumpper, Executive Director of the organization. “One patient we had was not breathing and did not have a pulse. I put him on the cardiac monitor, and he had a rhythm that did not produce a pulse. We continued CPR and used a device to breathe for him. We defibrillated the patient 2 times and his heart went back into a normal rhythm!” This agency is one example of an organization with a mission of people helping people. The United Way is proud to fund the Honesdale Ambulance Volunteer Corps. as we support their mission. | September 28, 2007 Have You Heard of PikePAHelp.org?
This online database is filled with over 200 human service agencies and organizations that serve the people in our community. The website is updated in real time, so information about the agency, organization and their programs should be accurate. The United Way of Pike County understands that not everyone in the community has immediate access to a computer, and therefore does not have access to this important information. That is why every year the United Way has this very same on-line directory printed into a hard copy book; the Community Services Directory (PikePAHelp). This book is distributed to administrative buildings, schools, libraries, churches and many human service agencies all over Pike County. The books are targeted towards places that have great public access in order to serve everyone. As you may have guessed, it is that time of year again! 150 copies of the Community Services Directory (PikePAHelp) have been distributed all over Pike County. So if you are in need of some type of human service and do not have access to a computer, check your local township building, library, school, church or a human service agency. Help is out there, you just have to know where to look! After registering and receiving their Day of Caring Volunteer tee-shirts, provided by Altec-Lansing, they enjoyed a wonderful breakfast prepared by Delaware Valley's own vo-tech students. Each volunteer was assigned to a project site at one of these human service agencies: The Anne St. School, Bushkill Outreach Center, Pocono Educational Environmental Center, Country Ark Farm, Camp Speers-Eljabar, Safe Haven, Habitat for Humanity, Holy Trinity Food Pantry, The Sunshine Station, The United Way of Pike County, The Pike County Humane Society, Center for Developmental Disabilities, Pike County Developmental Center, Church of Good Shepard, The Pike County Area Agency on Aging, Pike County Library, G.A.I.T. (Genuine Alternative In Therapy), The 9/11 Memorial Blood Drive and Wayne-Pike Adult Literacy. Volunteers arrived at their project sites ready to put in a good days work. Through all of their hard work, the volunteers collectively completed 21 projects by 3pm. "It was a beautiful day! I saw so many volunteers having a great time, and many agencies that were just so pleased they could participate. This was a truly successful event!" Stated Sue Robbins, Co-Chair of the Day of Caring. The United Way of Pike County would like to thank Altec-Lansing for supporting this event in their donation of our Day of Caring tee-shirts, and for continually showing support to the United Way. | June 14, 2007 The United Way of Pike County Recruits Young Volunteers
“I wanted to provide a fun way for people to donate food. The concentration on cereal made it easy for people to go to the store and buy a few boxes to donate, and cereal goes a long way.” states Sue Casey. Sue was also responsible for organizing a group of volunteers to help collect and distribute the food. Her volunteers were Sam Juro, Cory Wilson, Megan Welsh, Casey Wilson, Faith Torkildsen, and Aly Gentry. The United Way of Pike County recruited some young volunteers to help give back to the community. The volunteers began and maintained a food drive of dry cereal over the course of a few months. They ended up collecting over 500 boxes of cereal. After the cereal was collected and counted, it was divided equally to distribute to 5 local food pantries which were Good Shepherd Ecumenical in Milford, Holy Trinity in Dingmans, Loaves ‘n Fishes Methodist in Paupack, Bushkill Outreach in Bushkill and Good Cheer in Greeley. The food was delivered and handed out directly to the public. The volunteers did a wonderful job with this project, and the United Way is very grateful to them. “It was such a pleasant experience to work with these volunteers. They handled everything from collecting the cereal to figuring out where it was going to be distributed. I am thankful that these youth really stepped up with this project.” stated Peter Ioppolo, United Way of Pike County President. | May 19, 2007 Donations to the United Way Make The Difference Every Day for Survivors Resources
“We have an excellent staff that is committed to giving above and beyond” stated Linda Lastarza of Survivors Resources. Survivors is a place to go when someone is in need of immediate help from being victim of sexual or violent abuse. By using the 24 hour hotline, clients can call at any hour to reach out for help. Jamie Velsor of Survivors helps to manage an emergency shelter for people to get away from a high tension environment. While clients are under the care of Survivors, they are assisted in getting back on their feet and planning for a better and brighter future. Legal resources are available for clients through the generous time donated by many local lawyers who talk to the clients free of charge. Support groups are available to individuals who have been subject to violence or sexual abuse. Cindy Stein of Survivors is involved in prevention education programs in school districts of Pike County that educate children on issues such as healthy relationships, anger management, and self-esteem. Programs such as R.Y.O.T, Rallying Youth Organizers Together against rape, opens youth minds to issues such as diversity, awareness, education and prevention. Her teachings reach out to students of all ages, from kindergarten through 12th grade. Cindy also organizes “Socio-dramas” for the schools, which are theatrical portrayals of situations children have to deal with. It is interactive theater where both the actors and the audience identify problems, brainstorm on how to solve them, and come to conclusions together. Class room dialogues are also put in place to help students deal with issues such as moving up in grade level, what to expect, and how to handle it. Peggy Emanuel, who is a volunteer and also the hotline coordinator, is entering her 18th week in counseling women who are incarcerated. Peggy councils the women on issues about domestic violence by showing films, exploring triggers and holding one-on-one sessions with them. May 6, 2007) Classic Day, Classic Golf, Be a Part of It
"Many businesses and residents from Pike County are supporting this event. It's really heartwarming to see so many people supporting our mission which is to help Pike County residents who are in need." stated Tom Regenski, tournament chair and a United Way Board Member. Woodloch Springs is Pike County's premier private resort. The tournament will be played on their 18-hole par-72 golf course. The outstanding signature 14th hole requires a dramatic 220-yard carry over "Hells Gate Gorge" which is carved from the rugged mountainside by rushing water some 200 feet below. Open since 1992, this breathtaking course has been given national recognition by both GOLF Magazine and Golf Digest as one of the finest courses in America as well as being noted as a "rare" find in Met Golfer Magazine. "The purpose of this fundraiser is to provide a forum to continue raising funds for our local human service agencies. It's been a delight to work with Bob Kiesendahl because of his experience with hosting successful golf tournaments and his passion for helping people who are in need." says Ron Schmalzle, United Way board member. A portion of the proceeds from this event will be donated back to the United Way. Peter Ioppolo, president of the United Way of Pike County stated "Success in fundraising events would not be possible without the tremendous support received from family, friends, and local businesses." 21, 2007 United Way….Helping Our Children through Born Learning Peter Ioppolo, United Way of Pike County Board President knows the value of educating our children. Not only does he manage the daily activities of the United Way of Pike County, he is the middle- school principal at Delaware Valley. “The Born Learning Initiative is a campaign designed to help parents provide their children ages zero to five with quality early learning experiences. The campaign is designed to communicate to parents and caregivers that learning starts long before children are old enough to go to school and as a result a child’s success depends on small learning lessons each and every day.” states Ioppolo. Dana Wojciechowski, Project Coordinator for the Early Care and Education Coalition of Pike County, is very familiar with the Born Learning campaign. “Through the support of the United Way Born Learning Campaign, I am able to help parents, grandparents, and caregivers explore ways to turn everyday moments into fun learning opportunities with information, resources and tips. For more about Born Learning, and quicktips for Learning on the Go, visit www.bornlearning.org.” According to the Department of Education, almost half of America’s kindergarteners come to school behind. The poorest kids are already more than a year behind. Most of the investment in children in this country happens in the school years, not in those critical early years. Experts know that investing in a child’s success in the early years of his/her life is critical. Research shows the tangible results – adults with greater success in life, fewer involvements in crime, higher incomes, and higher education levels. Yet many families aren’t sure what they can do to encourage early learning. And many communities want to support early learning but aren’t sure how best to do that. “We are so pleased to partner with the United Way and McCann Erickson to develop this heartwarming campaign to encourage adults to take an active role in their child’s learning process at an early age,” according to Peggy Conlon, President & CEO of The Advertising Council. “In today’s society, parents are extremely busy so I hope that these new PSAs will inspire parents to realize that making the most of everyday moments is simple and will greatly impact their child’s future.” “Children are our future and research shows it’s never too early for them to start the learning process,” stated Brian Gallagher, President and CEO of United Way of America. “United Ways across the country invest some $769 million a year in early childhood learning, but it’s not nearly enough,” Gallagher continued. “We are pleased to be working with The Ad Council and McCann Erickson on this public service campaign that provides simple tips for parents and caregivers to help very young children learn from everyday activities.” “As marketers, it is rare, to have an opportunity to empower and demonstrate how a “slight” shift in current everyday routine can become a learning opportunity for every mother, father, caregiver and their loved child.”, stated Ana Ceppi, Senior Vice President, Group Director of McCann Erickson “this campaign recognizes that every child is influenced by their caregiver’s ability to seize the moment and make it more fun and meaningful.” Per the Ad Council model, the PSAs will run and air in advertising time and space that is donated by the media. The Ad Council is a private, non-profit organization with a rich history of marshalling volunteer talent from the advertising and media industries to deliver critical messages to the American public. Having produced literally thousands of PSA campaigns addressing the most pressing social issues of the day, the Ad Council has effected, and continues to effect, tremendous positive change by raising awareness, inspiring action, and saving lives. To learn more about the Ad Council and its campaigns, visit www.adcouncil.org. | April 11, 2007 Chuck O’Neil Donates Book Proceeds to Pike United Way
His chapbook “Memorial Days” is dedicated to veterans who were “lost in the battle of their hometown returns.” The poem was a front-page feature in last year’s Memorial Day issue of the Pike County Courier. A native of Connecticut, O’Neil was editor of his college literary magazine, a commune-dweller, a musician. He’s currently the owner of an architectural woodworking business, husband, father of four, and an avid supporter of the United Way of Pike County with its mission to “meet critical community needs.” Peter Ioppolo, board president, stated: “the support of our community is overwhelming. It has been my pleasure to work with so many people who have a desire to support Pike County residents that are in need. Last year, the United Way of Pike County allocated about $90,000 to 23 human service agencies that provide clothing, food, and shelter to our county. We are getting ready to start our allocations for this year and the help from Mr. O’Neil will be supporting this process.” Chuck O’Neil’s books and chapbook are available in Milford at Mill Run Booksellers, The Gallery and Seventh Street Coffee. Cost for books is $7 each, for chapbook $3, all proceeds donated to United Way of Pike County. | February 9, 2007 Barbara J. Buchanan Makes $1,000 Gift to Pike United Way
So it was a pleasant, but not unexpected treat when Mrs. Buchanan paid a visit to the current board of directors to present them with a generous check for $1,000. In making the presentation to Board President Peter Ioppolo, Mrs. Buchanan commented that although her commitment to Pike United Way goes back to its beginnings, it's really the human services and initiatives that they have fostered in the community day in day out, year in and year out, that refreshes her enthusiasm and commitment. Said Mrs. Buchanan, "Pike United Way is really committed to our community and citizens, and that cements my commitment to Pike United Way". Board President, Peter Ioppolo noted that he was impressed by the steadfast generosity of Ms. Buchanan and said that he was thankful for her continued support. Her continued presence has helped triple the campaign goal which is $150,000 this year. With the help of people like Mrs. Buchanan, Pike County employers, and gifts large and small from many citizens, we are confident that we will meet this goal. Mrs. Buchanan closed her visit by urging the public to join her in making a gift, and asking them to remember that every gift, to the United Way of Pike County, large or small, is important and will help to maximize services for those in Pike County who are in need. We want visitors to walk away having learned something or having had a new experience. The Expo is a family event and we encourage activities for all ages from infants through senior citizens. As a community organization, we hope you will utilize this opportunity to promote your mission and the services you offer Pike County residents. If you wish, you are invited to have a door prize at your booth in order to gather information for a mailing list and we will gladly announce your winner at the end of the day. One table (4' X 4') and two chairs will be provided to each exhibitor through advance registration. So please register early. Volunteers will be on hand to assist exhibitors with unloading and loading at Speers Lodge. We ask that exhibitors plan to stay for the entire length of the event.
