7th Annual Coat Drive Underway!

Holding a Coat at the Wachovia Bank
The leaves are falling, the temperature is dropping and winter is almost here! Let’s keep our residents warm and toasty with winter coats.  The United Way has once again teamed up with Wachovia Bank’s Valerie Seitz and Bushkill Outreach’s Kate Newman for the Seventh Annual Winter Coat Drive.  Winter coats and are being collected now thru November 13th. At the following Wachovia Bank locations: Milford, Dingmans Ferry, Lake Region, Matamoras, and Lords Valley All of the coats collected will be taken to The Bushkill Outreach center to be distributed to Pike County residents who need them.

“This is such an important community initiative. In lieu of the current economic climate and the strain that it is putting on our residents, we need to reach out to them. With so many of our friends and neighbors facing financial hardship a donation of warm coats will certainly help.” said Christine Obser, UWPC President.

“We do the coat drive every year because it is something that really helps members of our community. Particularly with the current economic situation, this is a good way to help those who can’t afford to buy for themselves. I love doing the coat drive and knowing that it really can make a difference in someone’s life,” stated Valerie Seitz, Financial Specialist at Wachovia Bank in Milford.

If you have any questions about the coat drive please contact Valerie Seitz at (570)296-5616. Give Where You Live! At Work with United Way

Holding a plaque
Pictured: L-R: Barbara Tarquinio, UW Campaign Chair,  Frank Tarquinio and Christine Obser, UW President.
Do you live in Pike County but commute outside your community? Do you wonder how you can give back to your hometown while you spend your day far from home?

The United Way of Pike County wants you to know that you can still “Give where you Live” by making your payroll deduction to United Way of Pike County using UW code #40129. It’s that simple and UWPC guarantees your generous donation will go where it is needed most in your community.

Recent published statistics show that more Pike County residents filed for personal bankruptcy, mortgage defaults are climbing, food pantry requests have increased and local agencies are inundated with requests for emergency services.

It’s the mission of The United Way of Pike County to help fund community human service agencies dealing with these challenges. The United Way of Pike County Campaign for 2009 successfully met its goal, raising over $150,000 for local human service agencies dealing with hunger, homelessness, abuse, addiction and basic human care here in Pike County.  Most of these regional human service agencies are uniquely local and do not have support from a national organization.  They rely on your donation to the United Way of Pike County.

UWPC asks you to “Give where you Live” so that your payroll donation goes where it’s needed most in your community.  When indicating your payroll deduction donation at your place of work, please use United Way code #40129 to re-direct any United Way donation back to Pike County.

We all win when communities stay connected ensuring our families are financially stable and our people are healthy. Please invest in your community by donating your payroll deduction to the UWPC and “Give where you Live!” in 2010.

If you are interested in making a payroll deduction donation to United Way of Pike County, please use  UW ID #40129. Other Pledge Codes for the Pike United Way:  PA State Employee Campaign (SECA) 4314, Combined Federal Campaign PA (CFC PA) 3436 and Combined Federal Campaign NY (CFC NY) 7400

Help Beef Up Our Community and Our Blood Supply!

The United Way of Pike County Day of Caring is Saturday September 12th from 9am to 3pm. Volunteers from the community spend the day working together to help county human service agencies accomplish those end of summer projects. Look for the Delaware Valley Student Car Wash and Bake Sale, buses destined for local non-profits, and friends and neighbors committed to community service.

But most importantly on this day the United Way of Pike County partners with the American Red Cross, Pike County Chamber of Commerce, Myer & Myer CPA Firm, the Pike County Library and the Pike County Commissioners to host the Annual 9/11 Memorial Blood Drive at the Delaware Valley Middle School Gymnasium.

Now it is said that real men love to grill, so ladies, here’s your chance to make it happen. Scott Myer of Myer and Myer CPA Firm announced that his firm will donate an outdoor gas grill from Lowe’s to be raffled off to one of the extraordinary donors. As you can see the grill is awesome! Sorry, Scott is not included with the grill! All blood donors will be given a raffle ticket at the door where they will fill out their name and telephone number. You do not have to be present to win. To donate blood you must be 17 years of age, weigh at least 110 pounds, be in good health and have identification with you.

“The American Red Cross is the single largest supplier of blood products to hospitals throughout the United States. The need for blood is constant, but during the summer your gift of blood donation is especially important.” stated Christine Obser, Director of Human Development of Pike County and UWPC President.

“This year the United Way and the American Red Cross have set a goal of collecting 110 units of blood. We want to help them achieve that goal and we need your support to do it. Giving blood is one of the easiest things we can do in order to make an immediate and positive impact in our community. So please come out and donate. You may be the lucky winner of the grill! Good Luck.” Said Scott Myer of Myer & Myer, CPA.

The United Way of Pike County asks you to help save a life or change a life by giving a little of yourself. Every unit of blood saves three lives! Every volunteer enriches the community! This summer may be almost over but there’s still time to help clean up the neighborhood, wash the car, “Fire up the Barbie” and give a gift of life…Priceless!

Day of Caring Breakfast begins at 7:45 in the DV 9-10 Cafeteria. The Blood Drive hours will be 8:45 am to 3:00 pm. Walk-Ins are welcome. For further information about the Blood Drive or The Day of Caring visit the UW website at

Scott will pull the winning ticket at the end of the event and the lucky winner will be notified. You do not have to be present to win. Doors open at 8:45 am and close at 3:00 pm. To donate blood you must be 17 years of age, weigh at least 110 pounds, be in good health and have identification with you.

This is your chance to do something AMAZING.  Every unit of blood saves three lives!
Greg Myer of Myer & Myer and a frequent blood donor said, “ It is a critical time for blood donations and your gift really can save a life. We realize how hard it is to balance work and family and know that we all have time commitments. We are donating a raffle prize to add some fun to the event. It is our way of saying thanks to the special people that make the time to come out and donate.”

The United Way of Pike County gives a big “thank-you” to Scott Myer and Greg Myer for their generosity and continued support of the United Way and to community donators who plan on giving the “Gift of Life”. Christine Obser, President of the United Way, and Joe Casmus, Principal of the Delaware Valley High School, announce that the 9th Annual Day of Caring and the 6th Annual 9-11 Memorial Blood Drive will be on Saturday September 12th. The community-wide Day of Caring is designed to promote the spirit of volunteerism, increase the awareness of local service agencies and schools, and demonstrate what people working together for the community can accomplish. Local residents will travel to non-profit human service agencies and share the spirit of volunteerism as they work to clean up, clean out, and refresh for the coming months ahead.  All around the County you will see people painting, cleaning, filing, gardening, building and, even more importantly, carrying on the tradition of community service through giving and sharing.

“The Day of Caring is a phenomenal day for the United Way. Last year we had almost 350 volunteers. It was amazing to see so many residents come together to help agencies that serve other community members in need. Come out and join us!” said Christine Obser, President of the UWPC.

Joe Casmus explained that registration and breakfast will start at 7:45 AM in the 9-10 Cafeteria and the Blood Drive will start at 8:45 am in the Middle School Gymnasium, both on the DV Campus. “I am always so proud to see our students step up in the spirit of volunteerism and spend a day helping others. I encourage all of our students to participate. In fact Delaware Valley School District will once again provide busing so that any student who wants to participate in this extraordinary day will have the opportunity to do so.” said Joe Casmus, Principal of Delaware Valley High School.

After the “Breakfast for Champions” in the Delaware Valley 9-10 Cafeteria at 7:45, the actual “work day” begins at 9 am and ends at 3 pm. Remember there will be school bus transportation. The United Way needs you and the Red Cross asks you to remember that every pint of donated blood saves 3 lives!  If you are a non-profit Pike County Human Service Agency in need of assistance, or if you are interested in participating in the Day of Caring as a volunteer, please check our website,

Group Photo of PCDC and United Way with Big Check
Pictured: L-R Liz Torkildsen, PCDC Director, Clients of PCDC, and John Gilpin, Pike County Treasurer and United Way Board Member.
The United Way of Pike County was very pleased to present a $7,000 check to Pike County Developmental Center for the continued support of adults with disabilities living in the county. These funds help the Center provide their clients an opportunity at achieving their life’s purpose through education, vocational training, social interaction and life skills instruction.

“PCDC participants benefit every day from community support through the United Way. Our services are designed to provide clients with a foundation of confidence through the structure and guidance of our programs helping them to achieve personal goals as happy productive members of society. United Way funds are critical to providing these services”, said Liz Torkildsen, PCDC Director.

Currently the 19 PCDC clients volunteer in community organization activities, work part time at vocational training centers and several have moved on to competitive community employment.  “I like going to PCDC because I'm happy to be around friends, I look forward to getting out in the community, I've learned a lot of daily living skills including cleaning, and I like working on special projects/fundraisers like the Tricky Tray and PCDC Craft Store Sale." said George Moon, PCDC Participant.

United Way donations have enabled PCDC to purchase educational supplies, provide instructive outings, employment training, nutrition classes and recreational programs.

“Our United Way contributors and volunteers, realize the need to rise to the challenge and make a difference in life where it is needed most. This is what we mean by Living United and we thank our community champions for their support. I would also like to thank Liz Torkildsen for welcoming me in to the Center to meet all of the clients it truly was an honor. Thank you for all you do Liz!” said John Gilpin, Pike County Treasurer and United Way of Pike County Board Member.

The United Way of Pike County Campaign for 2008-2009 successfully met its goal, raising over $150,000 for local human service agencies dealing with hunger, homelessness, abuse, addiction and basic human care here in Pike County.

“Giving to United Way is the best way to change lives and help shape our community. Because of your donation to the United Way of Pike County, organizations like PCDC will continue to provide neighborhood services helping individuals and families to thrive. Golfers Get into the Swing for the United Way

Group Photo of Several United Way Board Members and Leadership
Pictured: L-R: Tom Regenski, UWPC Vice President, Barbara Tarquinio, UWPC Campaign Chair, Celeste O’Neil, UWPC Board Member, Mike Donlon, UWPC Board Member, Christine Obser, UWPC President, Patrick Kranich, UWPC Board Member and Bob Kiesendahl, UWPC Golf  Classic Chairperson.
The Woodloch Springs Country Club was a beautiful setting for the 3rd Annual United Way of Pike County Golf Classic that took place on Monday, June 22nd.  Many players returned for the 3rd year in a row! Other players arrived for the first time and were amazed at a course that winds through fern-carpeted forests, lush wetlands and broad upland meadows. The Woodloch Springs golf course is nationally recognized by GOLF Magazine as "one of the finest courses in America” with a variety of challenges, accommodating all levels of play and ability.  The picturesque, pristine setting and adrenaline-filled course challenges, added to the fun of supporting this United Way fundraiser.

The golfers had a chance to win awesome hole-in-one prizes – a New Holland Tractor provided by Tractor John and Krempasky Equipment, a Fat Boy Harley Davidson Motorcycle provided by Baer’s Sport Center, or a Triton Bass Fishing Boat provided by Seaman’s Marine.

Christine Obser, President of The United Way of Pike County, reminded all who attended that, “The United Way’s mission is to alleviate homelessness and hunger and to improve the lives of our friends and neighbors in need. It is with this mission that we strive to reach our goal and continue to fund local human service agencies that so desperately need our help. We express our sincere gratitude to everyone that came out to support us today.”

The United Way then welcomed a guest speaker from The Center for Developmental Disabilities. Tom Ahearn shared the story of how he and his wife Eileen discovered a beautiful little boy named Brandon who was in the foster care system. Brandon was removed from a very abusive home situation and has severe physical and emotional disabilities. He was placed in care of the Center for Developmental Disabilities when Tom and Eileen decided to take Brandon into their home and foster him. “Our goal was to provide a stable loving environment in which Brandon could heal and grow. Eileen and I have created a home environment for Brandon to feel loved, an environment where he could open up and learn to trust and interact with others in a positive manner. We know this process will be long and we are so grateful to the staff at CDD and to the United Way for their support.”

“Tom Ahearn eloquently reminded us all of the importance of supporting the United Way in any way we can.  Through our funding, we have such a direct impact on individuals who are in desperate need of help.  This was such a shining example of how individual lives can be positively changed because the community cares,” said UWPC Vice President Tom Regenski.

The United Way thanks all who supported and participated in the 3rd Annual Golf Classic, especially the Woodloch Springs Country Club for hosting this event.

We hope you will come out for a rematch next year!

Just before dusk Saturday evening on July 18th, and long before the doors officially opened, guests began lining up outside the beautifully renovated Tom Quick Inn eager to join Moishel and Camille’s Engagement party, a unique event to help the community through the United Way.   What a night! Guests and Family were greeted with music on the beautiful porch and breath-taking front gardens. They passed into the fine dining area, with upholstered chairs, white linen tablecloths and magnificent flower arrangements donated from the private garden of Barbara Tarquinio, sushi bar, and the immense cocktail bar lovingly restored to its former elegance. The breezeway connecting the dinning room with the ballroom was lined with great raffle and grand prizes. The Grand Ballroom, with theater seating, was assembled for guests to sit beneath crystal chandeliers while watching the show. Family and friends brought decorated engagement gifts of essential items for local food pantries while "Sugar" and the engagement party performed, delighted and worked the crowd. The servers carried trays of delicious hors d'oeuvres, a taste of the menu from Chef Lyle Bolyard. Then there was the amazing Night Club!  DJ Flow was in command of an awe-inspiring laser show complete with a fog machine.  All were transported to an elite high-end dance club. The turnout was overwhelming.

“We are very grateful to The Tom Quick Inn, J-Angelo Event Planning, BigHeartTravel.com, Elli.gant Cakes, DJ FLOW, In Spite of Ourselves, Studio West Dance Club, The Craft Show, The Dimmick, Golden Fish, Bodies in Balance, Pike County Chamber of Commerce, Frost Photography, our advertising media and all the performers who generously volunteered to donate their services to this event for the United Way of Pike County.  But most of all we thank the community for their awe-inspiring response and support for a mega night of fun with a bigger purpose.” stated Barbara Tarquinio, United Way of Pike County Campaign Chair.
Besides raising funds to support our community, the party seemed to touch a local need to re-connect.   It was a time for making new friends and for old friends to reacquaint in a beautiful setting that felt like coming home.

To all who volunteered or attended, James Campistrous (“Sugar”) said, “Please accept my most sincere expression of gratitude for the remarkable outpouring for this United Way Gala.  Please sleep soundly knowing that you have helped hundreds of families in their time of need through your wonderful generosity.”

“I especially want to thank the dedicated United Way volunteers, James Campistrous who donated his considerable time, talents, resources and experience and Reza Ghassemi for re-establishing and donating the historical landmark Tom Quick Inn, enabling the United Way to bring this fundraiser to our community”, said Christine Obser United Way of Pike County President.

Tricky Trays are United in Purpose

Group Photo Holding Basket and Poster of CJR
Pictured: Tom Regenski, Jr. UWPC Vice President and Caleb Regenski’s uncle, Barbara Tarquinio UWPC Campaign Chair, Erica Nemeth and Joe Regenski Caleb Regenski’s father.
Seasoned “Tricky-Trayers” know everyone’s a winner at tricky tray events but this spring it’s especially true for the United Way of Pike County and the Caleb Regenski Memorial Foundation.

On April 18th the United Way of Pike County Tricky Tray event will be held at Delaware Valley Middle School and on April 19th the Caleb Regenski Memorial Foundation Tricky Tray event will be held at Ehrhardt’s Waterfront Restaurant. It’s a weekend for winning great raffles and beautiful baskets while raising money for a great cause with double the fun and twice the opportunity to help a community in need.

The CJR Memorial Foundation was started in loving memory of a little boy who brought so much love and joy to everyone he met. Caleb was a happy, healthy 2 year old until a malignant brain tumor ended his life in February of 2007.

“The goal of the CJR Foundation is to support parents during a child’s illness in any way, whether it be covering a rent or mortgage payment, electric or medical bill, or even groceries for the week. No parent should ever have to prioritize a payment or job before care of their sick child” Said Joe Regenski, Caleb’s father.

“It is the mission of the United Way to offer hope and help build futures by mobilizing the community efforts in Pike County to ensure the well-being of our families. We encourage organizations like the CJR Foundation making a difference where they recognize it is needed most. ” Said Tom Regenski, UWPC VP, and Caleb’s Uncle.

Through the generous donations of its community, each year the United Way supports local human service agencies alleviating homelessness, sickness, hunger and abuse right here in Pike County.

On April 18th doors will open at 2 pm and calling starts at 4:00 for the United Way of Pike County event at the Delaware Valley Middle School.  The CJR Foundation event at Ehrhardts Waterfront in Hawley, is from noon – 2:30 pm with drawings at 3:00 pm. Pictured: Elva Zingaro and Barbara Tarquinio UWPC Board Member and Campaign Chair.
This year the United Way of Pike County has expanded its efforts to raise needed funds for our local human service agencies. On April 18th a Tricky Tray event will be held at Delaware Valley Middle School to help support these local non-profits.

To help Kickoff this event, local businesses and community artisans are donating their gifts to the United Way and its mission. Most recently the United Way was fortunate to meet local artist Elva Zingaro who moved to Pike County from Yorktown Heights, NY five years ago. Elva generously has donated many of her personal baskets and talents to this United Way Tricky Tray event in April.

“We are very grateful to Elva for her generous spirit and desire to give back to her community through the United Way of Pike County”.  said Barbara Tarquinio UW Chair.

After raising her 4 children, and well into her forties, Elva went back to school for a teaching degree and taught with distinction for 20 years in the Yonkers, NY School Districts.  On moving to Milford in 2005, Elva fulfilled a life long desire to paint and now studies art history and oil painting at SCCC. Elva’s style has been described as gentle and reflective, exhibiting a sublime ethereal depth. Her beautiful Landscapes, Portraits, and Still Lifes adorn the walls of many homes of friends and family including her 8 grandchildren.

“It’s rewarding to help a charity with an established reputation for funding our local agencies. With the United Way, I feel very reassured that our donations go where they are needed most. ” said Elva  Zingaro.

Elva’s work will be displayed at several local venues including the Milford Borough Hall Annual Arts and Craft show, Cedarwood Center for the Arts, and local showings this April.

On April 18th doors will open at 2 pm for the United Way of Pike County Tricky Tray Event at the Delaware Valley Middle School Gym offering great prizes, trays, raffles and refreshments.  Bring your friends and family and support your community.

United Way Welcomes Joe Casmus to Its Board

New United Way Board member, Joe Casmus with the Board President.
Pictured: Delaware Valley High School Principal, Joe Casmus, receives his United Way packet from UWPC President Christine Obser.
The United Way of Pike County feels fortunate to have Joseph Casmus join its volunteer Board of Directors.  For over 30 years, Joe has been involved with the youth of our County.  He has been a Guidance Counselor, Assistant Principal, Director of Support Programs, and, for the last eleven years, Principal of Delaware Valley High School. He is also the married father of three and recently became a grandfather. Joe first became involved with United Way five years ago when he became an integral part of helping out with the annual Day of Caring. The United Way considers this a vital day for Pike County, enlisting volunteers from the school and community to help the non-profits fulfill a wish list of to-do projects.  “Joe’s enthusiasm and follow through were vital to the United Way’s efforts.  There wasn’t a thing we asked of him that he didn’t do his best to provide,” said Sue Robbins, United Way co-chair of the day. “I’m so thrilled that he will be a part of our Board.”  Christine Obser, United Way President said, “I’ve enjoyed working with Joe on so many projects, he is just such a logical and fitting choice for our Board. We are lucky to have him!”

For Joe’s part, he says, “after years of helping out with Day of Caring and seeing the positive results of what United Way does, I’m eager to join the Board.  Being in touch with the youth of this County the way I am, I know the importance of United Way’s mission and see the impact of many of the programs it supports on our youth.”

Ski Big Bear at Masthope and Support the United Way

Pictured: l-r UWPC Board Member Tom Regenski stands with UWPC Board Member and Big Bear Owner Ron Schmalzle and Big Bear Ski School Director David Neenan.
This winter is a ski enthusiast’s dream and United Way is thrilled to be a part of it!  Ski Big Bear at Masthope Mountain is once again hosting a Ski Weekend where a portion of the proceeds from every ticket sold will go to the United Way of Pike County which will in turn give back to the community non-profits in Pike County. UWPC provides necessary funds for a whole host of agencies – be they for physical and emotional therapy, for helping families in distressed situations, for helping the elderly, or for any critical need Pike County citizens might have. “This is a weekend I look forward to every year.  I love skiing but there is extra excitement when I know that, while having a ball on the slopes, I’m also contributing to a very worthy organization – the United Way,” said frequent Big Bear visitor, Dave Ross.
The Schmalzle Family, owners of Ski Big Bear, go one step further in helping the community.  If you bring in 4 non-perishable food items for our local food pantries, you will receive a discount on your lift ticket. They are hoping for a big turnout because food pantries are serving more people than ever and inventory is down.

“We hope you will put a big X on your calendar for March 6th, 7th, and 8th.  Come swish down the slopes at Ski Big Bear and help your community at the same time.  Now that’s a win-win situation,” said Christine Obser, United Way Board President.

United Way Looks for Strength in Numbers

United Way of Pike County Board Members Go Over the Numbers
Pictured: United Way of Pike County Board Members John Gilpin on the left and Scott Myer go over the numbers with Barbara Tarquinio, UWPC Campaign Chairman.
The United Way of Pike County is grateful to some of the best local financial minds for their analysis of the current donations and needs for our 2008-2009 campaign. Unfortunately, the Balance Sheet reports that needs are surpassing funds in part due to   rising unemployment and a deepening financial crisis impacting local households. Furthermore, we know that only the generous support of the community at large can reconcile the numbers. “With the stark reality of this economic climate, the United Way’s efforts to support local human service agencies become more important than ever. With the help of the community, we fund the programs that address the most pressing needs of our families, friends and neighbors. Now it’s time for all to help fill in the blanks,” stressed Barbara Tarquinio UWPC Chair.

“We continue to rely on corporate payroll and local business donations as well as the generous gifts of individuals in the community. These important funds keep our community healthy. This year our fundraisers are also essential to balancing the realities of need and support,” said Scott Myer, UWPC Board Treasurer.

The United Way continues to hold community events to raise money and increase public awareness of community needs.  March 6th, 7th and 8th are the dates for the annual Ski Big Bear event at Mast Hope.  On April 18th the United Way will host a Tricky Tray event at Delaware Valley HS.  And June 22nd is the date for third annual Golf Classic. For information about participating in, or donating to, these events, please call the United Way office 570-296-9980.

The United Way of Pike County relies on your donations and involvement to help meet the needs of our neighbors who are served by the many local human service agencies we support.  Together we will find strength in our numbers.

Woodloch Continues Its Leadership Role with United Way

United Way and Woodloch Representatives Holding a $5,000 Check
Pictured: (l-r) United Way Board Members Tom Regenski, Frank Redington, and Christine Obser  are all smiles as they receive a check from the Woodloch Family represented by John Kiesendahl, Steve Kiesendahl, Bob Kiesendahl (also a UWPC Board Member) and Brad Kiesendahl.
Woodloch Resort, a four season resort, located in Hawley, PA, has been voted the Number #1 Best Place to Work in PA and is also one of the Top 10 Green Businesses in the Poconos. It should come as no surprise that an organization which demonstrates such care of employees and the environment would also extend its care to the community in which it lives.  Recently, Woodloch gave a generous check of $5,000.00 to the United Way of Pike County. Bob Kiesendahl, son of the owner, John Kiesendahl, is even a member of the UWPC Board.  Bob has said, “I’ve always believed that Woodloch’s success is because we care not only for our immediate Woodloch community but the extended community as well.  Helping the United Way financially is the best way I know to support our neighbors who are in distress at this time. I’m pleased that the Woodloch Family can continue this tradition.” Christine Obser, United Way President, says, “We are grateful, always, for the support Woodloch has given the United Way.”

The United Way of Pike County 2008-2009 campaign is currently at 40% of its goal. Barbara Tarquinio, Campaign Chairman for United Way, adds, “Many thanks to Bob Kiesendahl and family for their generous donation to United Way of Pike County, especially in this difficult economic environment.  It truly speaks to their concern and dedication to making a difference for our community.”

Woodloch will hold its third annual United Way Golf Tournament June 22nd at the Woodloch Springs Golf and Country Club.  For those who enjoy golf, it’s a fun round; for those who enjoy dining, it’s great food; for those who enjoy raffles, it’s hard to resist!

Why Not Put that Old Car to New Use?

While many of us are taking advantage of the winter weather to sort through and clean out what we have inside the house, just as important is to take a look outside.  Do you have an old car, truck, boat, motorcycle or RV that is taking up space outside that might be put to better use?  Habitat for Humanity, a nonprofit, ecumenical, Christian Housing Ministry, will travel to your home and remove this equipment for you.  By donating the vehicle, you will help your local Habitat for Humanity build houses for families in need of decent affordable shelter. In return, you will be rid of your unwanted vehicle AND you may be eligible for a tax deduction if you itemize. Consult the IRS or your tax advisor for details.  Please call 1-877-277-4344 or visit www.carsforhomes.org for additional information. It can be easier than you think to clear out that garage or to clean up the lawn!

Habitat for Humanity is one of the many nonprofit organizations the United Way sponsors. HFH is dedicated to working with families of all backgrounds, races, and religions to give them hope for a better future.

For more information about Habitat for Humanity, visit its web site www.hfhpc.org or phone 570-828-1623. For more information about the United Way of Pike County or any of its events you can visit

PikePaHelp.org Offers HELP to All in Pike County

Screen shot of PikePaHelp.org
Picture: PikePaHelp.org has a listing of human, health, public, community or other essential services available to the people of Pike County.
There is a wonderful resource for those of you who are concerned about the cold winter and chilly economic climate we all find ourselves in.  PikePaHelp.org, managed by the United Way of Pike County, is an online database of over 200 human service agencies and organizations that provide human, health, public, community or other essential services to the people of Pike County.  The site was recently reformatted using the latest web application platform and also has a fabulous new look thanks to our site host, Michael Sumerano of Sumerano.com.

Since not everyone has computer access, the United Way published a book of the online directory and distributed it to county and township administrative buildings, schools, libraries, churches, and many human service agencies – any place that has great public access.  Special thanks to the Pike County Youth Coalition for helping put the books together and distributing them throughout the county.  Brochures entitled “Find Help Now” are also available throughout Pike County with a listing of agencies that offer assistance.  The goal of the United Way is to help build and support the human services infrastructure in the county and to aid the members of our community in need with finding the resources available to them.

The directory and brochure are posted in PDF format on the PikePaHelp.org and United Way of Pike County website at
www.unitedwaypike.org for anyone to download and print their own copy; direct link to the directory and brochure.  Support for this program was made possible by the United Way of Pike County, a Monroe/Pike Community Services Block Grant and the Pike County Human Services Development Fund.  For more information about the United Way of Pike County, any of its programs, or to make a donation, visit www.unitedwaypike.org, or call toll free 888-306-6963 or 570-296-9980.  “What Matters”, “Offering Hope – Building Futures” – It’s the United Way!
